In a bold move to foster the growth of golf at the grassroots level, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Golf Association convened a stakeholders’ enlightenment meeting with six selected schools in Abuja to unveil its innovative ‘golf to school’ program.

The participating institutions—GSS Gwarinpa, GSS Karshi, GSS Tundun Wada, GSS Gwagwalada, GSS Dutse, and Aduvie International School—gathered to explore the integration of golf into their curricula and the appointment of dedicated golf desk officers within the schools.

Chairman of the FCT Golf Association, Akabom Enebong, underscored the association’s dedication to collaborating with the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s education and sports departments to establish golf academies. “We are here to introduce golf to the schools as part of our efforts to develop the game at grassroots levels. We seek your support to build the game, and we intend to provide materials to your schools,” Enebong stated.

He emphasized that golf is not merely a sport for the elite but a beneficial activity that can cultivate top talent among students. “We are excited to partner with you in building golf academies across the FCT,” he added, highlighting the program’s potential to shape the future of young golfers.

Victor Orifah, representing the school principals from GSS Gwagwalada, expressed gratitude for the initiative. “On behalf of the schools, we welcome this noble idea of bringing golf to the schools. We assure you that the materials provided will be well maintained, as it is our responsibility as principals,” he affirmed, acknowledging the pioneering role of the participating schools in this groundbreaking program.

The meeting also saw support from Adamu Hashimu Ojah, Director of the Department of School Sports, who commended the association’s efforts. “This is laudable, and as a department of school sports, we are ready to work with you. Education extends beyond the classroom, and with golf, we aim to nurture students who excel in competitions, possibly even bringing glory to the FCT at events like the National Sports Festival and the Olympics,” he noted.

The launch of the ‘golf to school’ program marks a new chapter in promoting sports education and accessibility, promising to inspire a generation of young athletes and enhance the profile of golf within the community.
