Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has emphasised the need to strengthen livestock production to enhance food security, promote sustainable agriculture, and foster peace in Nigeria.
FCT minister of state, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, stated this during the 2025 National Pasture Planting Day held at the Kawu Grazing Reserve in the Bwari area Council, Abuja.
She said pasture planting goes beyond mere farming, describing it as a vital intervention to ensure year-round quality feed for livestock, curb overgrazing, combat land degradation, and accelerate the shift toward modern, settled livestock systems.
“These efforts will not only boost productivity but also help prevent conflicts, encourage peaceful coexistence, and safeguard our environment,” she said.
While highlighting the Kawu Grazing Reserve as a key agricultural asset in the FCT, she noted that with improved pasture management, better water infrastructure, and expanded veterinary services, the reserve could serve as a national model.
“This initiative will enhance milk and meat production, generate employment, and strengthen harmony among rural communities,” she added.
The minister praised the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development for spearheading the project and acknowledged the contributions of farmers, herders, and development partners driving innovation in the sector.
Reaffirming the FCTA’s commitment to pasture development, Mahmoud described the event as a symbol of our shared vision for abundance, peace, and prosperity.
“The National Pasture Planting Day reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proactive approach to tackling challenges in the livestock sector, particularly in ensuring consistent access to quality animal feed. This positions Nigeria toward a more modern, productive, and profitable livestock value chain,” she said.
In his remarks, the minister of livestock development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, stated that the event signified more than just planting seeds; it represented the sowing of a transformative vision under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“This is about resuscitating grazing reserves, advancing sustainable livestock development, promoting environmental stewardship, encouraging peaceful pastoral practices, and economically empowering millions of Nigerians who rely on livestock for their livelihoods,” Maiha explained.
He disclosed that the ministry had facilitated the release and registration of eight new pasture varieties into the national seed system, the first such release in 48 years.
The minister assured Nigerians of the administration’s commitment to implementing the National Livestock Growth Strategy, approved by the National Economic Council, alongside other policies to foster peace, productivity, and prosperity in the sector.
“We urge collaboration between communities and government to ensure the success of grazing reserves. Together, we can build a thriving livestock industry that benefits all,” he added.
The event concluded with a ceremonial planting exercise, symbolising the government’s dedication to agricultural innovation and sustainable development.
