The Federal Capital Territory Vehicle Inspection Office (FCT VIO) has inducted a new batch of volunteer “Road Traffic and Vehicle Inspection Mayors” to assist in managing traffic flow across the nation’s capital.

The induction ceremony for the 2024 Batch A was held in Abuja and presided over by Yusuf John Suberu, the FCT squadron leader and national coordinator of the RTO/VIO Mayors programme.

In his remarks, Suberu appreciated the new inductees for opting to contribute to nation-building through traffic volunteerism.

He urged them to be good ambassadors for the directorate and the entire VIO corps in their external traffic management role.

“The RTO/VIO Mayors have set a pace for themselves by working alongside regular VIO traffic officers based on existing guidelines. Much is expected from you in the discharge of your duties,” Suberu stated.

The FCT director of Road Traffic Services, Dr Abdul Lateef Bello, also addressed the new volunteer mayors, calling on them to put in their best efforts to complement the work of the VIO.

He emphasized the directorate’s continued support for the RTO/VIO Mayors initiative.

Dignitaries present at the ceremony included representatives from the Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Customs Service, and the National Assembly member for Oshodi/Isolo.

About 30 new volunteer mayors took the oath of service at the induction presided over by senior officials from various agencies.

The RTO/VIO Mayors programme enlists volunteers to assist professional traffic managers in Lagos and Abuja to help ease gridlock and traffic challenges in cities through an “enlarged volunteerism” approach.
