The Federal Government has announced plans to fully digitalise the operations of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) before the end of December 2025, in a major step towards a paperless government.

This followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) and the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) for the digitalisation of FEC processes through the Cabinet Affairs Office (CAO), which coordinates the activities of the Council.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs Office, Dr. Emanso Okop Umobong, described the initiative as a landmark step toward modernising government operations and improving efficiency in documentation and archival processes.

According to a statement by the director of information in the office of the SGF, Segun Imohiosen, he noted that the project is part of the Tinubu administration’s broader commitment to innovation, digital transformation, and institutional efficiency.

“Digitalisation of the Cabinet Affairs Office will significantly ease the burden on Honourable Ministers, who currently have to handle voluminous documents during council meetings,” Akume stated.

“In December 2024, we achieved real-time transcription of Council proceedings. This next phase will fully digitalise all processes. By December 2025, we are confident that the Federal Executive Council will operate completely paperless, and we are grateful to NASENI for partnering with us to make this a reality.”

In his remarks, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NASENI, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, said the agency has successfully transitioned into a fully digitalised system and is ready to replicate the same success within the OSGF.

He noted that NASENI’s experience in technology innovation and digital infrastructure makes it an ideal partner to support the federal government’s plan to modernise governance.

“Our collaboration with the OSGF will not only enhance efficiency within the Federal Executive Council but will also set a new standard for digital governance in Nigeria,” Halilu said.

The partnership is expected to eliminate manual paperwork in the FEC, streamline communication among ministries, and strengthen the archiving and retrieval of government records.

According to the OSGF, the move is also aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises technology-driven governance and transparency in public administration.
