In a statement issued to journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the incident as a “heartbreaking tragedy” and extended the government’s condolences to the victims’ families and the people of Niger State.

“We join the government and people of Niger State in mourning this painful loss,” the statement read. “This heartbreaking incident has once again brought to the fore the devastating human and material consequences of fuel tanker accidents in our communities.”

The Federal Government lamented that despite continuous public sensitization and warnings, some individuals still risk their lives by attempting to scoop fuel from fallen tankers.

It emphasised that every Nigerian life is precious and such preventable tragedies underscore the need for increased public vigilance during emergencies.

“The Federal Government is saddened that, despite sustained public sensitization and repeated warnings about the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, some citizens still take such life-threatening risks,” the statement added.

The Minister commended the swift response of the Niger State government, security agencies, and emergency responders for their efforts in containing the fire, rescuing survivors, and providing immediate support to affected families.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), he said, has been directed to complement the State Government’s efforts by providing relief materials and medical assistance to victims and their families.

To prevent the recurrence of similar tragedies, the Federal Government has also mandated the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to intensify nationwide public awareness campaigns, particularly targeting rural and high-risk communities, on safety measures during emergencies.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire people of Niger State in this moment of grief. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may God grant their loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss,” the statement added.
