The federal government has issued a fresh flood warning alert to 14 states in the country.
A circular by the Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEW CENTER), signed by the director of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, states that five southern states and nine northern states should be on the lookout for possible flood disasters.
In the circular he issued in Abuja yesterday, Bokani called on relevant stakeholders, state government representatives, to be on alert to mitigate the impact of any possible disaster.
He urged them to always provide feedback on the situational report to the FEW CENTER.
He stated that a flood disaster was predicted following the locations and environs of those towns, adding that they are likely to witness heavy rainfall between September 4 and September 8, 2025, which may result in flooding.
The circular indicated the states under red alert as Ebonyi, Cross Rivers, Kano, Zamfara, Taraba and Abia State.
Others are Yobe, Plateau, Borno, Imo, Niger, Sokoto, Kaduna and Akwa Ibom.
The towns in the listed states are Umuahia, Sokoto, Langtang, Shendam, Kafachan, Shinkafi, Gembu, Mutum Biyu, Gwarzo, Okigwe, Wase, Wamakko, Ikom, Afikpo and Oron.
Taraba state which has the highest number of places and towns on that list was told to put the following towns on the watchlist: Duchi, Garkowa, Gassol, Gembu, Gun Gun Bodel, Kambari, Mayo Ranewo, Mutum Biyu, Bandawa and Nguruwa.
On the other hand, the states with the fewest towns and only one settlement on the list are Ebonyi, Borno, and Akwa Ibom, which have Afikpo, Ngale, and Oron, respectively.
