The Federal Ministry of Education has unveiled a new digital platform designed to promote transparency, accountability, and efficiency in Nigeria’s tertiary education system.

Known as the Federal Tertiary Institutions Governance and Transparency Platform (FTIGTP), the initiative will allow real-time tracking of funding, performance, and resource allocation across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

The minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, unveiled the platform in Abuja on Tuesday.

Speaking at the event, the minister said the initiative aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to promoting transparency and good governance across public institutions.

“Today marks a major milestone in our collective journey to promote transparency, accountability, and good governance.

“This platform will restore public trust and enable evidence-based policies and reforms aimed at improving performance-based funding decisions and resource allocation.”

He explained that for many years, Nigeria’s tertiary education data had been scattered across different platforms and reports, making it difficult to monitor progress or ensure accountability.

The FTIGTP, he said, provides a single, nationwide source of accurate and up-to-date data on institutional operations and financial flows.

“For the first time, Nigeria will have a unified platform that offers real-time visibility into students’ enrolment, government funding capital, recurrent, and personnel research grants, TETFund allocations, NELFund interventions, and performance indicators that allow for benchmarking across institutions,” Alausa said.

According to him, the platform represents a shift from opaque management practices to transparent reporting systems that will allow Nigerians to see how resources are being used and what benefits are derived from government investment in tertiary education.

“This platform will enhance financial transparency, improve resource allocation, promote accountability, discourage the misuse of funds, and foster trust in the management of our tertiary system,” he stated.

He stressed that FTIGTP is not just a digital tool but a reform instrument designed to institutionalise transparency, efficiency, and performance-based management across Nigeria’s tertiary education system.

“All tertiary institutions must comply with the mandatory data submission schedule in the first quarter of every year. Financial reporting on the platform will be part of institutional performance evaluation by local and international partners. Funding and interventions will increasingly be tied to transparency and accountability metrics.”

In her welcome address, the minister of state for Education commended the initiative as a crucial step in modernising Nigeria’s education governance framework.

“Today represents a significant step forward in promoting transparency, accountability, and data-driven decision-making in Nigeria’s tertiary education system.

“The FTIGTP offers a unified platform for accessing essential information across our institutions, aligning with the Ministry’s digital transformation agenda.”

She urged tertiary institutions to fully utilise and regularly update the portal to ensure its sustainability and long-term impact.
