The Federal Government has launched a special intervention project to mitigate flooding along the Birnin Kebbi-Argungu-Kaniyaka Road in Kebbi State.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, represented by Hon Abdullahi Yakassai, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North-West), commissioned the project on Wednesday at Argungu-Sokoto Road.

“The people of the North are very happy with Mr President for this intervention. It demonstrates his resolve to respond promptly to the challenges facing our communities,” Umahi said via his representative.

The project is part of emergency and special intervention projects across the country, aimed at curbing recurring flooding and erosion that had threatened the road’s integrity.

Ishaya Vandu, Controller of the Federal Ministry of Works in the state, said President Tinubu awarded the road project in 2024.

“The 1,068-kilometre Sokoto-Badagry Road is a dream that has come true. It was conceived during the administration of the late President Shehu Shagari and actualised under the Tinubu administration,” Vandu said.

Muhammad Abdullahi Ahmed, Director of Information at the Federal Ministry of Works, was among the officials leading the project team.

About seven kilometres of the road have been completed with concrete reinforcement, while earthworks have been carried out on about 135 kilometres. Stabilisation works have been completed on 25 kilometres, with construction commencing on the Yauri axis.

The Minister also inspected the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway and commissioned embankment works on the Kalgo-Jega Road, with state officials in attendance.
