The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) and International Organization for Migration (IOM) have reiterated the need to end irregular migration in the country.
The federal commissioner of NCFRMI, Hajia Imaam Sulaiman-Ibrahim, disclosed this yesterday in Abuja during the quarterly meeting of the technical working group on migration and development in Nigeria. The meeting aimed to enhance collaboration, coordination, and information sharing among stakeholders involved in migration management in the country.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim also reiterated the commitment of the federal government to ensuring effective migration management and the protection of vulnerable populations.
Welcoming participants from various sectors, including academia, private sector entities, civil society organizations, and international partners, she said the meeting focused on addressing the complexities of migration management and governance in Nigeria.
The review of the national migration policy, which was last updated in 2015, was highlighted as a priority for the current administration. The NCFRMI, through the technical working group, has been mandated to provide recommendations for the revision process. A committee was formed in November 2022 to oversee the review, and progress updates were presented during the meeting.
She said the technical working group evaluated the status report, discussed findings, and provided further recommendations. Sulaiman-Ibrahim said the recommendations will be presented to the inter-ministerial committee for implementation.
She noted that the meeting also featured updates and recommendations from various thematic groups involved in migration management.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim expressed appreciation for the political will demonstrated by President Muhammadu Buhari in addressing migration and issues concerning vulnerable populations.
She commended the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and Social Development for their leadership and coordination in assisting vulnerable groups in Nigeria.
