In a move aimed at bolstering the welfare and security of Nigeria’s civil servants, the federal government has officially operationalised the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS).

According to a statement signed by the director of Press and Public Relations, Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Eno Olotu, the initiative was designed to enhance staff welfare, improve workplace safety, and boost productivity across the Federal Civil Service.

The head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, announced the rollout during the commissioning of the ECS Help Desk in Abuja on Wednesday.

She described the scheme as a critical intervention that will provide timely compensation and support for civil servants affected by work-related injuries, diseases, disabilities, or death.

“The Employees’ Compensation Scheme represents our unwavering commitment to the dignity, safety, and well-being of every public servant. It is a key pillar in our efforts to build a more compassionate, secure, and productive federal workforce,” she said.

The ECS is set to complement existing welfare programmes such as the Group Life Assurance Scheme while extending protection to employees and their families.

According to Walson-Jack, the initiative underscored the dedication of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to safeguarding public servants and fostering a humane working environment.

To ensure effective implementation, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) and the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).

The NSITF will oversee the administration of the scheme through a transparent, payroll-driven system.

Speaking at the event, the managing director of NSITF, Barr. Oluwaseyi Mayomi Faleye, hailed the ECS as a major step toward institutionalising structured care and protection for civil servants.

“This scheme is not just about compensation, it is about building a system of care, accountability, and trust. The newly launched Help Desk will serve as a vital resource for information, claims assistance, and feedback, ensuring seamless service delivery to all beneficiaries,” he said.

The ECS Help Desk, located in Abuja, is expected to provide frontline support to civil servants, guiding them through the process of filing claims and accessing their entitlements under the scheme.

The rollout of the Employees’ Compensation Scheme marked a significant advancement in Nigeria’s public sector reforms, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a safer, more efficient, and responsive civil service.
