To boost local milk production, the federal government has trained Bauchi State pastoralists on modern methods of milk extraction and processing.

The training brought together 50 pastoralists from the 20 local government areas of Bauchi State where the participants were presented with stainless steel milking buckets to further aid their trade.

The controller of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Bauchi Office, Mr Daniel Abarshi, said the training was aimed at boosting milk production in Nigeria because the current output is far below the minimum requirement.

He said the federal government had been working to ensure that the animal and milk industry in Nigeria is revived, part of which is through training.

Abarshi called on the beneficiaries to put into practice what they have learned with a view to improving their standard of living and help in filling the gap of protein requirement deficiency in Nigeria.

A resource person at the event, Dr Rose Danladi Idi, said it is high time for pastoralists to embrace new methods of cattle rearing so as to boost their milk production.

To her, with modern ways of rearing animals and milk extraction skills, a pastoralist can keep 10 animals and get more profit than going about with a herd of cattle.

Some of the participants interviewed expressed delight in being part of the programme which, according to them, will serve as a turning point in their animal-rearing business.
