A member of the House of Representatives, representing Ideato North/South federal constituency of Imo State and Spokesperson for opposition coalition lawmakers in the National Assembly, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to invoke the relevant sections of the Constitution to discontinue the trial of the detained leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Ugochinyere, who made the appeal while addressing his constituents in Ideato at the weekend, noted that discontinuing the trial and releasing Kanu was necessary for the healing process and return of peace in the South-East region of the country.

Lamenting that Mazi Kanu has been detained for too long after being granted bail by a reputable court of law in Nigeria, the lawmaker said the release will open the door for general reconciliation and restoration of peace in the South-East and conversations that will lead to resolution of all issues that led to the security challenge.

Ugochinyere expressed optimism that the Tinubu administration will build on equal rights, justice, and fairness for all, irrespective of tribe, political affiliation, or religious belief.

The lawmaker said, “For us to be one strong united country, it must be built on the principle of justice, equity and fairness. That’s why we are begging for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to invoke the constitutional provisions of section 174 by issuing Nolle Prosequi that will see to the Termination and dismissal of the trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to help create the atmosphere for resolution of all issues.

“The constitution gives him power to discontinue any criminal prosecution. And that power is the power we want President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through his Attorney General to issue and release our brother Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. So that the path to peace and reconciliation can start. This release will open the door for general reconciliation and resolution of all the issues. The restoration of peace in the South-East and conversations that will lead to the resolution of all issues that led to the security challenges in the South-East can be made easy with the release of Nnamdi Kanu.”
