Federer Inducted Into Hall Of Fame

Roger Federer broke down in tears as he officially entered the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday, telling the crowd that his storied career was ultimately a lifelong “love letter” to the sport.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion, who retired in 2022, became emotional during the induction ceremony as he stood alongside legends Billie Jean King and John McEnroe. “This is one of the greatest honours of my life,” the 45-year-old Swiss said. “They call this the Hall of Fame, but fame was never the goal. My goal was to spend my life doing something I love, with people who love it as much as I do.”

Federer’s professional journey began in 1998 at age 16, culminating in a men’s-record eight Wimbledon titles, six Australian Opens, five US Opens, and his sole French Open crown. He claimed his first major at Wimbledon in 2003 and held the world No. 1 ranking for 310 weeks—a record later eclipsed by Novak Djokovic, who now holds 24 majors, while Rafael Nadal has 22.

Beyond the Slams, Federer captured Olympic doubles gold in Beijing 2008 alongside Stan Wawrinka and singles silver in London 2012, and he anchored Switzerland to its first Davis Cup victory in 2014.

In a lighter moment, the former ball boy from Basle revealed the less-heralded statistics of his tenure: more than 5,000 headbands and roughly 7,000 pairs of socks—”twice as many as most of my opponents, because I doubled them up,” he joked.

Wiping away tears, Federer thanked his wife Mirka, his idol Stefan Edberg, and the ball kids who endured his matches. He also paid tribute to the generations of rivals he faced, from Andre Agassi and Lleyton Hewitt to Andy Roddick, Nadal, and Djokovic. “I need tissues and sunglasses to protect me right now,” he quipped. “My time as a player is done, but tennis will always stand at the intersection of everything I care about most: my family, our friendships, the past 40 years, and the future we’re building.”
