The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi) has commenced the inspection of vehicles’ suitability for conversion and distribution of CNG kits to commercial motorists in Kaduna State over the weekend.

The Logistics and Supply Chain coordinator, P-CNG, Thomas Ayu, who spoke to journalists shortly after the arrival of the CNG kits at the Rollings Energy conversion centre in Kaduna on Saturday, noted that the programme also targets to give 10,000 kits for free across the country.

“We are handing over kits and cylinders for Mr President’s conversion initiative to our transport sector. Rollings Energy is one of our partners that is converting vehicles in the transport sector on behalf of our programme. For Kaduna State, we have 150 kits and 150 cylinders.”

Ayu further explained that the conversation and kit installation are free.

As the requirement for the conversation, the coordinator emphasised that vehicles must first pass a thorough inspection to determine their suitability for conversion. Once the vehicle is certified as okay, such vehicles will receive a kit for the conversion process.

“We are currently conducting an inspection of vehicles to assess their compatibility because of the available kits, which are four cylinders and six cylinders.

“CNG, unlike petrol, combusts completely when used, so there are almost zero emissions released, thereby reducing the danger. It is also not prone to explosion in the case of a leak,” Ayu stressed.

He stated further that the decision to target commercial vehicles was to ensure that the major idea of reducing the hardship of the common man through a reduction in their daily spending on transportation is achieved.

“We are calling on transporters and unions to take advantage of this programme to convert their vehicles.

“Our mandate is not for personal cars at the moment and it’s strictly for people in the transport sector. We have not started with individuals. We are purely converting cars for people in the transport sector so that the impact of the fuel subsidy removal will not be felt.”
