The Presidential Livestock Reform Implementation Committee has constructed a livestock model community in Sulluɓawa community of Bauchi local government as part of pilot reforms to transform the livestock subsector in the country.
The initiative also aimed at reducing the causes of farmers and herders clashes while exploring the potential of the livestock sector for national growth and development.
Prof. Attahiru Jega, the committee’s co-chairman, disclosed this yesterday during a courtesy visit to Governor Bala Mohammed at the Government House Bauchi.
Prof. Jega said Sulluɓawa community has an avalanche of cattle and other ruminants, hence the decision to site the model livestock centre in the community.
He said a hospital has been constructed in the community to carter for the health and well-being of the cattle.
Prof. Jega added that a nomadic school has also been constructed to provide quality nomadic education to herders, adding that a borehole with pumps to provide clean water to the cattle were provided.
He said President Bola Tinubu set up the committee because he believed in the huge potential of the livestock subsector to contribute meaningfully to the country’s economy and tackle widespread farmers/herders conflict.
Prof. Jega decried that before the coming of President Tinubu’s administration, the livestock sector had not received due attention compared to crop production.
Responding, Governor Bala Mohammed assured commitment to support the Presidential Livestock Reform Implementation Committee in managing and mitigating farmers’/herders’ conflicts.
He said the Presidential Livestock Reform and Implementation Committee is a welcome development as noted by the Northern Governors’ forum.
He said good security and nutrition are critical to the well-being of not only the people of Bauchi State but also Nigeria as a whole.
