The Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEW Centre) has issued a flood warning alert to Adamawa and eight other northern states.
A circular signed by the director, Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, yesterday in Abuja states that following their locations, certain northern settlements are likely to experience heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding within the period 25th August to 29th August, 2025.
Bokani, who called on relevant stakeholders on the Centre’s platform to give feedback on any emerging situation in their various states, also revealed that Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina states have been kept on red alert.
Other states listed on the circular that could witness flooding within the prediction period are Sokoto and Zamfara, which have Makira and Anka towns, respectively, as the areas on red alert.
Adamawa and Katsina states have the highest number of towns listed on the flood alert. Prominent among them are Adamawa’s Mubi town, Shelleng and Abba-Kumbo, and Katsina state, which has Katsina, Kaita, and Bindawa.
Jigawa State has Gwaram town listed on the alert. In contrast, Gombe, Borno, Kano, Zamfara, and Sokoto have the following listed towns: Nafada, Ngala, Sumaila, Anka, and Makira on the watchlist.
The director added that Bauchi State has two prominent areas that may be under attack. He said Azara town and Jama’a are part of Bauchi State and are on the Centre’s watchlist.
It would be recalled that just last week, the Centre issued additional flood warning alerts to different towns in about seven Northern states and advised that due to the rise in the water level of the river Niger, communities on the flood plain from Jebba to Lokoja should be evacuated.
A recent report by LEADERSHIP shows that despite the federal government’s warnings and constant flood alerts, some states’ environmental agencies and citizens have continued to pay less attention to flood warnings.
