The federal government, the Miners Association of Nigeria, and key security agencies are set to join forces in a renewed effort to combat illegal mining and mineral smuggling as Nigeria intensifies its push to reposition the solid minerals sector for economic growth and national development.

This collaborative stance will take centre stage at the Allied Bond Consulting National Workshop on Combating Illegal Mining, Smuggling, and Protection of Mining Sites and Communities, scheduled to take place in Abuja from April 29 to 30, 2025.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, chairman of the Miners Association of Nigeria, Engr. Dele Ayanleke and top security chiefs are expected to serve as guest speakers at the high-level gathering, which will bring together stakeholders across government, industry, and civil society.

In a joint statement signed by the chairman of the Organising Committee, Ahmed Yahya, and workshop coordinator, Willie Tawo, the organisers said the event aims to develop pragmatic strategies to curb illegal mining activities, promote global best practices, and enhance security around mining sites.

The two-day workshop will also seek to attract both local and foreign investment into the sector, strengthen the protection of mining communities, and position the solid minerals industry as a key pillar in the diversification of Nigeria’s economy.

“The menace of illegal mining and mineral smuggling continues to undermine Nigeria’s economic potential, endanger communities, and fuel insecurity. This workshop provides a timely platform to chart a coordinated and sustainable response,” the statement read.

Participants are expected to deliberate on measures to enforce mining regulations more effectively, adopt international standards in operations, and promote peaceful coexistence in host communities.
