To unlock Nigeria’s vast tourism industry potential, the federal government has called for increased collaboration between the public and private sectors to drive growth, investment, and sustainable development in the country’s tourism sector.

President Bola Tinubu made the call at the opening ceremony of the 68th meeting of the UN Tourism Commission for Africa (CAF 2025) in Abuja on Wednesday.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who declared the event open on behalf of President Tinubu, emphasised the critical role of partnerships between the government and the private sector in developing the tourism industry.

He said, “As we chart a new course for tourism in Africa, one thing is sure: The government cannot build the sector alone; it needs a partnership with the private sector.”

Shettima also pointed out the transformative impact of technology on tourism, noting that it has enhanced local entrepreneurship and community development.

“The advent of technology has transformed tourism and its opportunities. Apart from its economic value, tourism has the potential to enhance local entrepreneurship and community development,” he said.

Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, minister of arts, culture, tourism and the creative economy, also spoke. She said, “Guided by His Excellency’s Renewed Hope Agenda, we are pursuing a private-sector-led model. Only yesterday, we unveiled the 4,000-seat MEFA Arena in Abuja’s Arts & Culture Village, a new stage for concerts, fashion shows, and esports.

“In Lagos, we are partnering with Persianas and global giants Oak View Group and Live Nation to develop the Lagos Arena — a venue that will anchor West Africa’s live entertainment circuit,” she stated.

The UN Tourism Commission for Africa meeting is a significant event that aims to promote tourism development in Africa and foster collaboration among stakeholders.
