Federal government has launched the Sovereign AgroTrade System (SAS), an integrated digital platform designed to connect Nigerian farmers with local and international buyers, cutting out middlemen and unlocking new income opportunities.
Developed by the Nigerian Women for Agricultural Progressive and Development Initiative (NWAPDI), SAS provides farmers, especially women and youth with tools for market access, financing, quality certification and farm management.
The minister of state for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, who unveiled the platform yesterday in Abuja, called SAS an economic engine that blends technology, finance and trade to secure both food and financial sovereignty for farmers.
The minister, represented by his special adviser on strategy, Mohammed Sani, pledged support for the platform, with plans to integrate its data into Nigeria’s agricultural strategy.
“This is not just a platform, it is an economic engine, we are equipping farmers with the digital tools to scale production, attract investment, and capture greater market value,” he said.
NWAPDI national coordinator, Omolara Svensson said the system was born from experiences with undervalued harvests and limited market access for farmers.
“SAS is not just technology, it’s a promise that farmers can trade with dignity, get paid securely and grow sustainable agri-businesses,” she said.
The SAS ecosystem integrates: agrixchange marketplace, a virtual trading hub for direct farmer-to-buyer transactions, NWAPDI grow for access to microloans, cooperative financing, and mobile payments, agricert-quality assurance and traceability for export readiness and farmassure, a digital tools for farm planning, financial tracking and supply chain monitoring.
According to Svensson, the platform is expected to go live on September 1, 2025, and be rolled out nationwide, targeting all 774 local government areas.
