The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has congratulated Dr Abdullahi Mustapha on his election as president of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and confirmed that Sam Ahmedu faces no regulatory impediment to serving on the federation’s board.
In a letter dated 19 October 2026 and addressed to Mustapha, FIBA acknowledged the outcome of the NBBF elective congress held on 15 October and commended the federation for completing the electoral process.
The letter, signed on behalf of FIBA President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani, also congratulated members elected to serve on the NBBF board for the 2026–2030 term.
FIBA said it welcomed the NBBF’s commitment to good governance and the conduct of elections in accordance with its constitution and applicable FIBA regulations.
It also acknowledged the support and recognition provided by relevant Nigerian authorities and stakeholders throughout the electoral process.
On Ahmedu’s status, FIBA confirmed his position as the most senior Nigerian on its boards, noting that he had been a member of FIBA bodies since 1997.
“FIBA confirms the name and position of the most senior Nigerian on FIBA Boards: Mr Sam Ahmedu, who has been a member of FIBA Bodies since 1997, and that there are no impediments under the FIBA regulatory framework for his service on the NBBF board,” the letter stated.
The clarification followed a request by the NBBF to the international governing body.
FIBA also expressed appreciation to the outgoing NBBF board, led by Engineer Ahmadu Musa Kida, for its work and achievements during its tenure.
Kida, a long-standing member of the FIBA Finance Commission, did not seek a third term after eight years as NBBF president.
Mustapha emerged victorious at the 15 October election, polling 40 votes against eight for Olumide Oyedeji. Former candidate Ejike Ugboaja received no votes, while Igoche Mark withdrew from the contest.
The election followed tensions over the process, including a petition alleging irregularities and a court challenge that failed to stop the congress.
FIBA’s letter marks an important development for the new NBBF administration as it begins its four-year tenure, with the international body expressing support for the electoral process and clarifying Ahmedu’s eligibility to serve on the board.
