FIFA will introduce several rule changes at this summer’s World Cup aimed at eliminating tactics that slow play and waste time, referees chief Pierluigi Collina announced Tuesday.

Players who delay throw-ins or goal-kicks beyond five seconds will risk losing possession, with a corner awarded for goal-kick violations.

Those requiring physio treatment must remain off the field for 60 seconds, with limited exceptions.

Any player covering their mouth during a confrontation with an opponent could receive a red card.

Collina said the changes should reduce excessive stoppage time seen at the 2022 tournament. However, three-minute hydration breaks will be guaranteed in each half.

VAR will also gain new powers: corners can be quickly reviewed before restart, and second yellow cards leading to a sending-off are eligible for check — though potential second yellows will not be reviewed.
