A fire outbreak on Tuesday evening razed a section of the Bolade Arena Market in Oshodi, Lagos, destroying 10 clothing materials shops.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service which confirmed the incident said it received a distress call at about 5:50pm on Tuesday and immediately deployed firefighting teams, who arrived at the scene within five minutes.
The Controller General of the agency, Mrs Margaret Adeseye, said the response teams were drawn from Bolade, Ilupeju, Ikeja and Alausa fire stations to ensure the incident was swiftly brought under control.
According to her, the inferno affected five 40-foot container shops arranged in two rows, making a total of 10 shops, all stocked with bales of textile materials.
“The affected area is primarily used for the storage and sale of clothing materials. The fire has been confined to the affected section and successfully curtailed. The situation is firmly under control, and there is no risk of the fire spreading to other parts of the market,” Adeseye said.
She assured members of the public that adequate measures were taken to safeguard lives and adjoining properties, adding that investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the fire.
“An investigation into the cause of the fire will be conducted in due course, and further updates will be provided as necessary,” she added.
