Eleven shops were destroyed in an early morning fire at Jimeta Modern Market, popularly known as Falluja Market, in Adamawa State.
Mallam Abubakar Yahaya, a trader at the market, said the fire started at 12 midnight on New Year’s Day.
He said the wares in the affected shops were burnt as traders were not on the ground to put out the fire, nor were there firefighters or the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) present at the time of the fire.
According to him, security personnel, including policemen and local vigilantes within the market complex, already engulfed in flames, intervened to contain the inferno and prevent further damage.
He said preliminary investigations revealed that the fire started in a second-hand cloth shop within the market before spreading to other shops, which was believed to have been caused by an electricity fault.
Yahaya said no life was lost in the inferno, as the quantum of damage could not be ascertained at the time of this report.
