There was confusion at the Bodija plank market, Ibadan North local government area of Oyo State on Tuesday as some section of the market was gutted by fire, destroying goods worth millions of naira.
The cause of the fire was yet be ascertained.
A combined effort of fire service men from both the federal and state governments were on ground trying frantically to put out the fire.
The heavy evening downpour on Tuesday aided the effort of fire fighters. Traders in the market were seen scampering for safety while others were seen making frantic efforts to salvage few of their belongings.
Sympathizers and other traders in the market were said to have also joined forces with the fire fighters to minimise loss and curtail the inferno.
When contacted, the Director of Fire, Federal Fire Service, Mr. Okenla and his counterpart from the Oyo State Fire Service, Ismail Adeleke, confirmed the incident, noting that their men were currently at the scene to suppress the intensity of the fire.
They both said level of casualty or damage cannot be ascertained until the fight against the inferno was won.
Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the incident to newsmen.
South West Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Saheed Akiode said that men of the agency had been mobilised to the scene
Akiode said, “we are there to ensure the fire is put under control”.
