A pan-African humanitarian and education-focused organisation, The Graciella Initiative (TGI), has launched the Female Literacy Project (FLP) to increase literacy levels among women and girls in Africa.
TGI, driven by a deep commitment to education and literacy as catalysts for sustainable development, was founded by renowned African philanthropist and educator Ms Grace Anuforo.
In a statement released by the organisation, Anuforo, who is a 2022 Fellow of the United States Consulate and a passionate advocate for inclusive education, established the female literacy project in response to the persistent high illiteracy rates in Africa, particularly affecting girls and women who are at the receiving end of gender poverty.
“The Female Literacy Project is designed to provide accessible, community-based functional literacy, empowering girls in public primary schools and hard-to-reach communities with essential reading, writing, and numeracy skills.
“By focusing on female literacy, TGI seeks to address one of the root causes of extreme gendered poverty, inequality, and limited socio-economic participation across the continent,” Anuforo said.
She added that through strategic partnerships with governments, development agencies, educational institutions and civil society organisations, the project aligns with key global frameworks, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 4 and 5) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
‎The Graciela Initiative envisions an Africa where every woman is educated, empowered, and equipped to contribute meaningfully to societal progress, giving the continent a renewed image
