Five Things You Don’t Know About Menopause

It’s a Diagnosis Made in Hindsight

A woman isn’t officially in menopause until she has gone 12 consecutive months without a period. The phase leading up to this is called perimenopause, which can last anywhere from 7 to 10 years. During this time, hormone levels (estrogen and progesterone) fluctuate wildly, often causing symptoms long before her period actually stops.

Symptoms Go Far Beyond “Hot Flashes”

While hot flashes are the “trademark” symptom, the drop in estrogen affects almost every system in the body. Other common but less discussed symptoms include:

Brain Fog: Difficulty concentrating or feeling “spaced out.”

Joint Pain: Estrogen acts as a natural anti-inflammatory for joints. Mood Changes: Increased anxiety, irritability, or bouts of sadness.

Sleep Disruptions: Often caused by night sweats or shifting cortisol levels.

Bone and Heart Health Become Priorities

Estrogen provides a protective effect on a woman’s bones and her cardiovascular system. Once levels drop:

Bone Density: She can lose up to 20% of her bone density in the five to seven years following menopause, increasing the risk of osteoporosis.

Heart Health: Risk for heart disease increases, as estrogen helps keep blood vessels flexible and manages cholesterol.

HRT is No Longer the “Boogeyman”

For years, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) was feared due to older, misinterpreted studies. Modern medicine now views HRT as a safe and highly effective option for many women, especially when started early (the “window of opportunity”). It can help manage symptoms and protect bone health. Of course, it is a personal choice to be discussed with a healthcare provider.

It’s a New Phase, Not an “End”

In many cultures, menopause is viewed as a “Second Spring.” It marks the end of the reproductive years, but also the end of menstrual cycles and PMS. Many people find a renewed sense of confidence and freedom during this time as they transition into a different stage of life and self-priority.
