A heavy downpour yesterday caused flooding and traffic gridlock in many parts of Lagos State.

It disrupted economic activities and displaced residents in Ibeju-Lekki part of the state.

LEADERSHIP observed that the flood took over residential areas and major roads in the Ibeju-Lekki area of the state. Other areas hit by the flooding were Epe, Eredo, Bogije, Labora, Sangotedo, Awoyaya and Ibeju-Lekki.

A resident of Sangotedo who identified herself as Alice Fatai said, ‘’ We saw this coming because if you look at  some of the drainage channels, they have been blocked .The waterways have been blocked due to indiscriminate dumping of waste in the localities.’’

Videos circulating on social media showed areas such as Oshodi,  Iyana-Oworo, Oshodi, Ajah, Lekki, Ikeja, Egbeda, and Gbagada submerged in water.

The flooded roads were nearly impassable, leading to significant gridlock and discomfort for commuters.

Many Lagosians took to social media to express their frustrations and advise others to stay indoor.

“This is Gbagada to 7-Up inward 3MB. Stay at home if you have no business on the island. #Traffic,” Chu Osakwe captioned a video posted on X.

“If your route this morning is mainland to island via 3MB, just forget it. Turn back home or reroute. I just passed by on the opposite side and the beginning of Third Mainland (Iyana Oworo) is car doors. I’ve never seen that on the bridge before,” another X user, Mochievous, said.

“Please, let me adjust my advice. If you live in Lagos, do not even consider coming out of your house today. Everywhere is flooded. I didn’t expect it to be this bad on the mainland. Flooded and all the roads are blocked in any direction,’’ he added.

Reacting to the situation, the Lagos State commissioner for environment and water resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the flooding near the Third Mainland Bridge is a flash flood that will subside in about one to two hours.
