Flood Disaster: Group Launches Hygiene, WASH Intervention In Yobe

As part of measures to mitigate the effect of flood disaster on water and hygiene, the GOALprime Organization Nigeria (GPON) a non-governmental organisation has launched a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programme in the communities affected by flooding in Jakusko local government area of the state.

Jakusko was among the local government in Yobe State worst hit by the flood disaster in 2022 with many communities loosing their means of livelihood including water facilities.

The Northeast WASH officer of the organisation, Mr. Usman Saidu while speaking to the benefiting Community in Gasmu of Jakusko local government said the project funded by the Nigerian Humanitarian Fund (NHF) was meant to intensify lifesaving and mitigate the risk of waterborne diseases.

He said, “We are here as part of our mandate to intensifying lifesaving through WASH assistance to mitigate the risk of waterborne diseases and enhancing emergency rehabilitation assistance of WASH facilities and services damaged by flooding in Jakusko local government area of Yobe State.

“Through this project, GOALprime will provide the following WASH services, rehabilitation and optimization of non-functional boreholes, water quality test for chemicals and bacteriological analysis, water points chlorination and FRC monitoring, door to door hygiene promotion sensitisation and mass speaker campaign sensitisation.

“Also to be provided include rehabilitation of the non-functional latrines, construction of communal latrines, provision of WASHCOM with technical support to carry out routine operation and maintenance on water systems,” he said.

Saidu said the organisation will also meet with the local stakeholders in the benefiting communities on their hierarchy of their needs for bottom to top approach.
