Three people have been reported killed in flood disaster that wreaked havoc on over 92 communities in Nasarawa State while no fewer than 465,000 people were displaced in the state. This was disclosed by the executive secretary of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA) Barr Zachary Zamani Alumaga.

Alumaga said five local government areas of the state including Awe, Doma, Nasarawa, Toto and Lafia, are likely to experience flooding.

In an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP, he confirmed that other local governments that are likely to experience flooding are Karu, Kokona, Akwanga, Wamba and Nasarawa Eggon.

Alumaga opined that the flooding was as a result of heavy torrential downpour and opening of Lagdo dam in Cameroun.

He commended the federal government as well as the state governor, Engr Abdullahi Sule for bringing succour to all the affected communities in the state.

“The governor spent two weeks touring almost all the communities, providing relief materials and cash donations to victims, alongside the federal government through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

“The only way out to avert future occurrence of flood in subsequent years, according to him, include the collective effort of Nigerian governors meeting President Muhammadu Buhari to fine tune ways to end flooding in the country,” he said.

The executive secretary of NASEMA added that the flood that ravaged the state can never be averted because it is a global phenomenon which affects most of the states of the federation.
