The national convener of N’Edo Gheria, Dr Patrick Ebojele, has appealed to residents of Edo State to desilt the drains as heavy rains are expected due to global warming.

He noted that increased flooding can be better controlled when citizens drain the drainage, allowing water to flow freely, thereby reducing the effect of flooding.

Ebojele, the national convener of N’Edo Gheria, a socio-political and cultural group, said necessary steps should be taken to enlighten the populace and encourage them to adopt proactive measures to address flooding.

“It is of note that, the world is experiencing global warming and Nigeria is not an exception same for Edo State. We can as citizens collaborate with Government to clean our environment rather than playing politics of hate as it’s been exhibited by some persons.

“While it is true that government must provide the enabling act and environment for the evacuation of our debris, it’s of note that the citizens must also be mindful of green areas, moats and other water ways which research has shown overtime has been seriously encroached on by some persons therefore causing some of this menace whenever it rains.

“Rather, we urged everyone to be an advocate of helping to sensitize our people on the need to keep our environment clean. We must stop politicizing everything, after all there have been governments before this one, and we had erosion problems.

“Let’s support and encourage our leaders to be focused on governance rather than politicking.

“By understanding the consequences of global warming during the rainy season, we can take steps to mitigate and adapt to these changes, reducing the risks and impacts on communities and ecosystems.”
