Former Senate leader Mohammed Ali Ndume has condoled with the residents and Government of Borno State following the catastrophic flood that inundated numerous homes and areas of Maiduguri, the state capital.

In a statement released in Abuja, Ndume, who represents Borno South, urged the federal government to take immediate action and provide support to the State Government for the benefit of affected residents.

According to the state government, the floodwaters have risen significantly due to the reported failure of the Alau Dam, which has been at full capacity for over a week.

“Given the unusually high rainfall this year, we advise all those living near riverbanks to take swift measures to safeguard themselves and their properties,” the State Government’s statement indicated.

The floodwaters from the Alau Dam have reportedly breached another channel, threatening to damage agricultural lands and encroach further into residential areas.

Senator Ndume, who recently visited Borno to support families affected by insurgency in the Southern Senatorial District, remarked on the distressing news regarding the flood’s devastation.

He emphasized the need for a collective response, calling on development partners and government agencies to mobilize urgently to assist those impacted in Maiduguri.

Ndume praised the State Government for its proactive measures, noting their efforts to assess the situation and provide necessary aid to those in affected areas. However, he stressed that the scale of the damage exceeds the State Government’s capabilities, making federal intervention crucial.

As a result of the flooding, several institutions and government offices have suspended operations, including the University of Maiduguri, which announced its closure until further notice in a statement from its registrar, Ahmad A. Lawan. The university extended its sympathies to staff and students affected by the disaster.

“This incident in Maiduguri is truly unfortunate. The extent of the destruction is severe. I have been informed of the situation, and it is critical that we address it urgently,” Ndume stated.

He noted that homes, educational institutions, government offices, and businesses have been submerged, with many residents stranded and in need of evacuation. Ndume expressed concern that without federal support, conditions could worsen.

He also appealed to international partners, development agencies, and benevolent individuals to act swiftly to prevent a potential humanitarian crisis in Maiduguri.

“I am consulting with my colleagues, the State Government officials, and relevant stakeholders to explore solutions to this crisis. It is imperative that we take steps to prevent such occurrences in the future. This is a serious disaster, and we require the prayers and support of all Nigerians.”
