Governor Abddullahi Sule disclosed this in Lafia, the state capital.

The Governor said the state has been identified among those that will play a key role in achieving the food security agenda of the federal government.

LEADERSHIP reports that President Bola Tinubu had in January 2024 stated that the Federal Government would cultivate about 500,000 hectares of farmlands to combat hunger in the country.

“I am well aware that for some time now, the conversations and debates have centred on the rising cost of living, high inflation which is now above 28 percent and the unacceptable high under-employment rate.

“To ensure constant food supply, security and affordability, we will step up our plan to cultivate 500,000 hectares of farmlands across the country to grow maize, rice, wheat, millet and other staple crops,” Tinubu had stated.

Out of this, Governor Sule said Nasarawa State plans to cultivate 10, 000 hectares of land for the production of a chosen crop.

He said he has prevailed on the State Executive Council to come up with a modality to acquire the required land for the project.

“We are expected to look at no less than 10, 000 hectares of land for the production of a particular crop. We are considering deploying our available resources as well as the resources that would come as a result of the project. The Executive Council has to take the decision about developing the 10, 000 hectares of land,” he said.

He disclosed further that the National Agricultural Land Development Agency (NALDA), through the traditional council, has already supported 100 poultry farmers in the state and is getting ready to support another 500 farmers from across the state with farm inputs.
