Two former Premier League clubs have been penalised by the UK government for failing to pay their staff the national minimum wage.
Norwich City and Charlton Athletic were among hundreds of employers named in a government list, collectively ordered to repay approximately £60,000 to underpaid workers. Norwich City owes £99,021.76 to 1,152 employees, while Charlton Athletic must repay £17,983.18 to 45 workers. Both clubs will also face financial penalties on top of the back pay.
This marks the first public naming round under a government initiative to expose non-compliant companies. Business Secretary Peter Kyle stated that the new Fair Work Agency will rigorously pursue employers who flout the rules, asserting that businesses should not be built on unpaid wages.
The minimum wage for workers aged 21 and over is set to increase to £12.71 next month.
