The Concerned Religious Prayer Forum (CRPF) has clarified the growing criticism surrounding the recently launched seven-day national prayer initiative.
The director general of Concerned Religious Prayer Forum (CRPF), Chief Segun Balogun Afolorunikan, explained in a press conference that the government neither endorses nor directs its activities, emphasising that the initiative is rooted in a commitment to fostering peace, unity, and prosperity within the nation.
The CRPF, an independent non-governmental organization established on January 9, 2024, asserts that it is unwaveringly focused on the welfare of Nigeria and operates completely outside the purview of governmental influence.
He expressed disappointment over the politicisation of what the forum intended to be a collective spiritual effort. While drawing from religious texts, the director general cited references from both the Bible and the Quran that underscored the power of prayer during difficult times.
He quoted 2 Chronicles 7:14 from the Bible, highlighting the importance of humility and prayer for national healing. He echoed a sentiment from Surah Al-Baqarah in the Quran about divine responsiveness to believers.
The forum’s choice to invite prominent figures, including First Lady Sen. Oluremi Tinubu and the national security adviser Nuhu Ribadu, to lead the prayer initiative was described as a respectful gesture intended to inspire greater national involvement.
“While they were not consulted directly, we believed their leadership could galvanise a broader public engagement,” said Afolorunikan.
Addressing sceptics who question the practicality of prayer in confronting Nigeria’s myriad challenges, Afolorunikan emphasised that faith and hard work are not mutually exclusive.
“Our call for prayer is not a fallback from diligence. Instead, it is a humble recognition that alongside our collective efforts, we seek divine guidance,” he remarked.
The director general called on leaders and citizens to view the initiative as a unifying call for national solidarity.
“The journey to Nigeria’s peace and prosperity is not solely about policy making; it also requires the heartfelt support of its people, including their prayers,” he asserted.
As the initiative unfolds, the CRPF urges all Nigerians to join in prayer and action for a better future.
“May we all work diligently and pray earnestly for Nigeria. Together, let us seek divine intervention as a catalyst for national healing and growth,” he said.
