The Arewa Socio-Economic Forum (ASEF) has dismissed as false claims of a new vehicle tax allegedly introduced by the Federal Government, urging Nigerians to disregard the viral message.
In a statement, the Forum said its independent findings showed that neither the Nigeria Revenue Service nor the Federal Ministry of Finance had introduced any such levy.
The statement, signed by ASEF National President, Aminu Kuta, described the circulating message as misleading and capable of causing unnecessary anxiety among citizens.
“There is no new tax on vehicles as being falsely circulated in some quarters. Our findings confirm that no such policy exists,” the Forum stated.
ASEF said it undertook a review of available information and engaged relevant stakeholders before arriving at its conclusion, stressing the need to prevent misinformation.
The group warned that fraudulent messages and unofficial payment channels are increasingly being used to exploit Nigerians, urging the public to rely on verified government platforms for tax-related information.
“We advise Nigerians to disregard such misleading content and verify information through official channels. Misinformation undermines public trust and creates confusion,” Kuta said.
The Forum, however, urged citizens to remain vigilant and actively monitor ongoing fiscal reforms, noting that recent changes in tax administration are beginning to yield positive results.
According to ASEF, increased Value Added Tax (VAT) allocations are improving the fiscal capacity of states, particularly those with weaker revenue bases.
It commended the Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, for promoting transparency and efficiency in fiscal policy, as well as the Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, for strengthening tax administration and public communication.
“The ongoing reforms are restoring confidence in the system and improving revenue outcomes. We commend the leadership driving these changes,” the statement added.
The Forum emphasised that sustained implementation, transparency, and public engagement are essential to consolidating gains from the reforms.
It also called for stronger collaboration between government institutions and citizens to ensure accountability and build a more effective tax system.
