FOSSU Warns Against Political Meddling In Student Affairs

The leadership of the Senate arm of the Federation of Oyo State Students’ Union (FOSSU) National Council has issued a stern warning against political interference in student union activities, reaffirming its commitment to integrity, unity, and constitutional order among Oyo State’s indigenous student population.

In a statement signed by the outgoing Senate President, Senator Sodiq Yusuf, the Council commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his continued support of student welfare, particularly through bursary payments.

However, it urged the Oyo State Government to expedite the release of the outstanding balance, noting that timely disbursement is crucial to sustaining trust and equity in the government’s relationship with students.

Reiterating its adherence to constitutional procedures, the Senate reaffirmed the legitimacy of the Electoral Committee inaugurated on June 14, 2025, in the Ibarapa Zone, describing it as the only body empowered to conduct the forthcoming FOSSU elections.

The Council called on all stakeholders to work with the committee to ensure a transparent, credible, and violence-free process.

The Senate also expressed concern over what it described as unconstitutional overreach by the leadership of affiliate bodies, namely the National Association of Oke-Ogun Students (NAOOS) and the National Association of Oyo Students (NAOS).

While recognising them as automatic senators within FOSSU, the Council warned that any acts aimed at undermining the union’s constitutional framework would not be tolerated. It urged all affiliates to act within the bounds of the law and respect the union’s internal processes.

The statement, however, reserved its strongest rebuke for the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Students’ Affairs, Mr. Victor Olojede, whom it accused of meddling in union matters and intimidating student leaders under the guise of representing the Governor.

FOSSU described such actions as a direct affront to student autonomy and the democratic ideals professed by the current administration. It urged Governor Makinde to caution his aide to prevent unnecessary tension and ensure the independence of student institutions is respected.

“FOSSU is not a political playground,” the statement read. “Any attempt to hijack its processes for personal or political gains will be met with lawful resistance.”

To uphold transparency and accountability, the Senate directed the immediate past Central Executive Council (CEC) led by Comrade Alarape Ibrahim to submit a detailed audit report covering the union’s finances, projects, and assets within 72 hours.

It also instructed that all union properties, including the official FOSSU bus, be handed over to the Electoral Committee. Failure to comply, it warned, would lead to disciplinary and legal consequences, including escalation to the state government and anti-corruption agencies.

The Senate paid glowing tribute to the late Comrade Adelere Abiodun, describing him as a visionary leader and tireless advocate for student rights. “His sudden passing is a profound loss to the student movement,” the statement noted, adding that his legacy of service, courage, and commitment would not be forgotten.

“FOSSU remains committed to protecting the interests of Oyo State students and fostering unity across all zones. We urge all parties to adhere to constitutional provisions, promote transparency, and prioritize dialogue in resolving disputes.”
