Daurama Foundation officially kicked off this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence with a special community theatre screening of its award-winning docu-drama, Voices Within, on Saturday, November 22nd,2025, in Durumi Community FCT.

Speaking during the kick off, Dr. Samira Buhari, Founder of Daurama Foundation stated “True change doesn’t happen in conference rooms; it happens in communities. By launching our 16 Days of Activism in Durumi, we ensured that those most affected by this crisis remained at the centre of the national conversation. This is their story, and this was their moment.”

Importantly, Voices Within was filmed in this same community, making the screening a symbolic homecoming. Residents many of whom were connected to the realities that inspired the film were among the first to experience it in their own environment.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Bem Pever, Voices Within explores the emotional and psychological complexities of gender-based violence. Through compelling storytelling, it amplifies survivors’ voices and challenges harmful norms that perpetuate abuse.

“As we commenced this year’s 16 Days of Activism, bringing the film back to Durumi was intentional and deeply meaningful, this community has endured displacement, instability, and increased cases of violence. The screening allowed us to spark dialogue, offer support, and stand in solidarity with those who continue to fight for safety and dignity.”

According to her the screening served as a community intervention. It was followed by a candid dialogue session that enabled residents to share their experiences and access critical support. Attendees received educational materials and were linked to resources for assistance.

Echoing this sentiment, Francisca Nzeagwu, Communications Coordinator for the Foundation, stated: “that Durumi was intentionally selected as the host community due to its history of vulnerability and displacement. Over the years, the area has served as a refuge for internally displaced persons (IDPs) seeking safety and stability, while some have returned to their original homes, many have settled permanently in the community.

Unfortunately, this transition has been accompanied by an increase in cases of domestic and gender-based violence, making it one of the communities most in need of targeted awareness and support.

The Durumi event marked the beginning of the Daurama Foundation’s activities for the 16 Days of Activism, reaffirming its commitment to creating a safer, more accountable, and empowered Nigeria for all women and girls.
