The French authorities have decided to simplify the procedures for foreigners in the country who want to renew their residence permit application receipt.

Starting July 15, 2024, there will be a new procedure that will allow foreigners to request the renewal of their residence permit application receipt online through a form that will be posted on the State Services website, Schengen.News reports.

While the authorities were yet to disclose additional information on the matter, the renewal application will be simplified and the link that directs foreigners to the form to make their request will be available as soon as the new rules become effective.

According to French State Services, “As of July 15, 2024, a new procedure will be posted on the website to allow you to request the renewal of your residence permit application receipt. The old link that allowed you to perform this same procedure will no longer be accessible from this same date. Instead, a link to simplified procedures will be displayed to you.”

A residence permit receipt is a document that proves that a foreigner in France has applied for a residence permit or its renewal at their prefecture and that they are entitled to legally reside in the country.

The receipt permits the foreigners to enjoy the same rights and privileges as all those who already hold a residence permit during the time that their file is being examined.

In most cases, foreigners who hold a receipt are also allowed to take up employment before their residence permit is ready.

France’s Public Service Website describes the receipt as “a document proving the registration of your residence permit application to the prefecture (or sub-prefecture) of your home. It allows you to stay in France for the duration it specifies.”

The receipt is valid for a period of four to six months. During this time, the prefecture examines the application for the residence permit.

However, in cases when there is a large number of applications, examination of the application can take more than six months.

In such cases, receipt holders can apply for a renewal. The receipt can be renewed for a period of up to three months.

Receipts are also issued to those who hold a residence permit, but their documents expire. While their residence permit is being renewed, this group of foreigners is granted a receipt with a validity period of three months.
