Fraudsters have devised new means of fleecing applicants for postgraduate admission to the Federal University of Lafia in Nasarawa State through admission racketeering.
The fraudsters have opened a Facebook platform and displayed a bank account for applicants, urging them to take advantage of the opportunity.
The scammers displayed an account name: Bursary Administrative Account.
However, the management of the institution said it has not commenced sale of new application forms for postgraduate programmes.
LEADERSHIP reports that the 2022/2023 intakes are due to commence second-semester examinations in late August before the management can advertise for new admissions.
A disclaimer by the school authority obtained by our correspondent described the Facebook account soliciting for applications into the school of postgraduate studies as fake while urging the general public to beware of scammers.
The disclaimer which was signed by the head, directorate of information and public relations, Abubakar Ibrahim, said the institution has its procedure of announcing the sale of application forms, adding that it had not authorised any person, company or group to collect money on its behalf.
“The university calls on members of the public to be cautious of the activities of fraudsters who may attempt to defraud unsuspecting individuals. Report any suspicious activities to security agencies. The university is working with security agencies to identify and apprehend those involved in these illegal practices.”
