The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned drivers against distracted driving as the month approaches.

Mrs Rukayya Zakaria, Sector Commander of FRSC in Kebbi State, made the call at a press conference to mark the commencement of the 2025 Ember Months Campaign in Birnin Kebbi.

The theme of this year’s campaign is “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving.” Zakaria explained that the Ember Months campaign is an annual tradition where the corps intensifies its road safety advocacy to reduce crashes, injuries, and deaths during the high-traffic season.

“Human factors remain the major cause of road crashes, and drivers must take full responsibility for their safety,” Zakaria emphasised. She identified driver fatigue, overloading, the conveyance of passengers in haulage vehicles, and the carrying of fuel in plastic containers as significant causes of accidents.

The sector commander listed common traffic infractions such as speeding, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failure to use seat belts, and the use of mobile phones while driving as major contributors to road crashes. She stated that the 2025 campaign was designed to address such violations through intensified enforcement and public awareness.

To achieve this, the FRSC will deploy personnel and special marshals across major highways and crash-prone corridors. “We will also conduct free vehicle checks, organise town hall meetings, and carry out rallies in motor parks nationwide,” Zakaria said.

The sector commander commended the state government for its continued support to FRSC and urged motorists and other road users to comply with traffic rules and take responsibility for their safety during and beyond the ember months.

Zakaria also highlighted the importance of partnerships with driving schools, fleet operators, NGOs, and civil society groups in promoting safe driving practices. She noted that mobile courts and stop-over operations have been instrumental in reducing offences such as overloading and speeding.
