The Federal Teaching Hospital Owerri (FTH) has recorded its first baby using the In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
The baby boy was born at about on January 2, 2025.
The chief medical director, Ass. Prof. Kingsley Achigbu, said the management of the hospital conceptualised the idea of having the Assisted Reproductive Services Unit a few years ago to assist couples experiencing difficulties in having babies the natural way, adding that it was to help them surmount such challenges and become proud and happy parents.
According to him, two consultants in Obstetrics and Gynecology Department were sent for training on IVF, noting that the arrival of the baby was a dream come true.
Achigbu stated that the IVF programme is now a regular feature at the Federal Teaching Hospital Owerri, available to people who want it.
He advised couples still having challenges of childbirth to embrace the option offered by FTH to fulfill their desire to become parents.
