Ten Nigerian companies have been included in FTSE Russell’s Frontier Index Series as the global index provider prepares to restore Nigeria to Frontier Market status from September 21, 2026, after a three-year absence.
The addition was contained in FTSE Russell’s September 2026 review of the Index.
The Nigerian stocks added are Aradel Holdings, Dangote Cement, First HoldCo, Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO), MTN Nigeria Communications (MTNN), Nestlé Nigeria, Nigerian Breweries, Presco, Stanbic IBTC Holdings and Zenith Bank.
The inclusion follows FTSE Russell’s decision to reclassify Nigeria from ‘Unclassified’ to Frontier Market status, effective from the open of trading on September 21, 2026.
The FTSE Frontier Index Series provides benchmarks covering large, mid and small cap companies across eligible Frontier markets. It is designed to serve as a performance benchmark for investors and as a basis for index tracking products such as ETFs and mutual funds.
Nigeria was removed from the index in 2023 due to foreign exchange liquidity challenges and difficulties repatriating funds. The return signals improved assessment of market accessibility by the index provider.
Market analysts said the reclassification will increase Nigeria’s visibility to global emerging and frontier market funds that track FTSE benchmarks.
Comercio Partners Group said that FTSE Russell will reclassified Nigeria’s market status from unclassified to Frontier Market, saying that this significant change will take effect at the start of trading on September 21, 2026.
“The reclassification follows a period during which Nigeria’s inclusion in the index was temporarily suspended due to the ongoing transition from a T+2 to a T+1 settlement cycle. This transition raised concerns regarding potential exposure to currency risk associated with pre-funding transactions.
“The acknowledgment of Nigeria as a Frontier Market offers a compelling opportunity for an influx of foreign capital into the Nigerian equity market.”
The Firm said, this status change not only enhances Nigeria’s visibility on the global investment stage but also expands the universe of investable stocks available to foreign investors.
It added that select Nigerian stocks, once again included in the FTSE Russell index, will now be accessible to a broader audience, potentially leading to increased investments and greater market activity, noting that this development signals a positive shift for Nigeria’s financial landscape and economic prospects.
