The management of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, has confirmed the death of one of its students, Favour Olaniyi, a year one student in the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, who was found dead inside a bush near the campus.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, was confirmed by the institution’s director of Corporate Communications and Protocols, Adegbenro Adebanjo, in a statement made available to journalists yesterday.
The university described the incident as tragic and said it promptly activated its security protocols upon being notified.
Adebanjo disclosed that the university security unit quickly alerted the police, who deployed officers to the scene for preliminary investigation. Medical personnel from the institution, working alongside security operatives, also assisted in evacuating the body to the morgue.
The institution said the parents of the deceased student have been informed of the unfortunate development. It added that the Nigeria Police Force has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, while the university is fully cooperating with the process.
The statement reads in part: “The parents of the student have since been informed about the unfortunate development. The police are currently investigating the incident, and the university is supporting the investigation and fully cooperating with the investigators.
Also, university officials are in touch with and providing counselling support to some of their co-students who may have been affected by the unfortunate incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents and family members at this very difficult time.”
‎Meanwhile, the Ondo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into what it described as a suspected suicide case involving the deceased.
‎The Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, said the 23-year-old student was found lifeless inside a bush along the FUTA North Gate axis in Akure on Saturday.
‎He added that detectives who visited the scene observed no visible signs of violence on the body, while a bottle suspected to contain a poisonous substance was recovered.

He also urged members of the public, especially young people, to seek support and counselling during difficult moments and to avoid actions that could endanger their lives.
