There is growing international concern over the United States’ expanded economic sanctions on Cuba.
Political leaders and policy experts have warned of serious humanitarian and geopolitical consequences.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, criticised the measures, describing them as “illegal” and a violation of international norms, and called on Washington to lift the embargo and respect Cuba’s sovereignty.
Cuba’s Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, also condemned the sanctions, labeling them “unilateral coercive measures” that amount to collective punishment of the Cuban people.
He argued that the restrictions contravene the principles of the United Nations Charter.
The tightening of sanctions followed directives signed by U.S. President Donald Trump, targeting not only Cuban entities but also foreign companies engaged in trade with the island.
Washington has maintained that the measures are aimed at promoting democratic reforms and addressing longstanding human rights concerns.
However, critics say the policies are worsening Cuba’s already fragile economic situation.
William LeoGrande, a noted U.S.–Cuba relations scholar, argued that broad sanctions often have “the greatest impact on ordinary citizens rather than political elites.”
The situation has been compounded by geopolitical developments in Venezuela. Following a U.S. military operation that led to the removal of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a key oil supplier to Cuba.
Havana has faced acute fuel shortages, contributing to power outages and disruptions in essential services.
Energy analyst, Jorge Piñón, noted that Cuba’s dependence on imported fuel makes it particularly vulnerable to external shocks.
“When supply lines are cut, the immediate impact is felt across transportation, electricity, and food distribution systems,” he said
Beyond Cuba, regional implications are also drawing attention. Geoff Ramsey warned that sustained economic pressure could trigger increased migration flows toward the United States and strain regional stability.
