The Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) has announced its plans to host the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) from 1st to 7th November in Abuja.

During a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the Association’s President, Dr. Mrs Lami Ahmed, revealed that Nigeria successfully bid for the event in Morocco, highlighting the nation’s significant influence among female golfers across the continent.

Under the banner of “NIGERIA 2026,” Ahmed stated that over 40 countries, featuring 120 amateur golfers, are expected to participate in the championship, which will take place at the IBB International Golf and Country Club.
She called upon stakeholders and partners to support what promises to be a landmark continental championship.

This will be Nigeria’s third time hosting the tournament, having previously held it in 1996 at Ikoyi Club and in 2010 at the IBB International Golf and Country Club.

The LGAN President expressed confidence in Nigeria’s preparedness and ambition for the tournament, declaring, “We are not just hosting to showcase our capacity; Nigeria is hosting to win. Our players are ready, our infrastructure is in place, and we are determined to make the nation proud.”

She emphasised that early preparations, strategic training programmes, and renewed partnerships are already in motion to ensure Team Nigeria competes fiercely against the continent’s best.

Ahmed extended her gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for their endorsement and unwavering support for sports development in the country, particularly in women’s golf. “We sincerely appreciate President Bola Tinubu and the First Lady for their encouragement and backing,” she stated.

She also acknowledged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for his infrastructural efforts in Abuja, which she believes will significantly contribute to the successful hosting of the championship. Additionally, she praised the Chairman of the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, for aligning with LGAN’s vision and providing the necessary institutional support.

In a symbolic ceremony, the AACT logo was unveiled, marking the official start of preparations for the continental event. Immediate past LGAN President Evelyn Oyome, who is also the event coordinator, assured that arrangements are progressing smoothly. “All preparations are on track regarding accommodation, logistics, and security for golfers coming from across Africa,” Oyome said. “We have also planned exciting side attractions and tourist destinations to ensure our guests have a memorable Nigerian experience.”

We are confident that the 2026 edition will set new standards for excellence in Africa,” Ekwueme stated.

AACT President from Gabon, Madamè Cécile Poncet, who joined via Zoom, described Nigeria as a trusted host with a proven capacity to deliver world-class events.

The 2026 championship highlights Nigeria’s rising profile in golf and reflects significant advancements in sports development, enhanced security, and a welcoming atmosphere for athletes and visitors alike.
