The Gombe State House of Assembly has completed the first and second reading of the Gombe State Disability Bill, paving the way for the establishment of a Disability Commission and protection of the rights for persons with disabilities.
The Advocacy for Disability Act Cluster (ADAC), a consortium of five civil society organisations, has applauded the Assembly for prioritising the bill, “which resonates with the commitment of the state government to empower persons with disabilities.”
The bill, sponsored by Hon. Shuaibu Adamu and co-sponsored by three other members, aims to provide a legal framework for protecting and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities in Gombe State.
ADAC, in a press release issued yesterday, commended the Assembly for demonstrating democratic values and responsiveness to the community of persons with disabilities, making it a pacesetter for other assemblies.
It urged the House Committee on Women Affairs and Special Duties to expedite the review process within six weeks, expressing the optimism that Gombe State will soon join the League of Inclusive States in Nigeria.
The press release reads in part, “This milestone is a testament to the power of advocacy and collaboration and a victory for the over 594,015 persons with disabilities in Gombe State.”
