The state secured the enviable position with a PSPI Score of 0.80, ranking first with an AAA rating, indicating an excellent performance.

Gombe is followed in declining order by Jigawa, Ekiti and FCT, which occupied second, third and fourth positions respectively.

The ranking is contained in the 2023 National Assessment Report by PCL. State Performance Index (PSPI), is an independent organisation which provides insights into the socio-economic performance and risk profiles of Nigerian states.

Gombe was rated high in most of the socio-economic parameters that were considered which include: economic potentials, socioeconomic performance and risk management.

At regional level, the report indicated that Gombe State stands out as the top-performing state in the North-East affected by Boko Haram Insurgency. “Despite being in the least position in terms of socio-economic potential, the Gombe State government; efficiently utilises its limited resources to drive significant socio-economic performance”, the report noted.

The report attributed the high rating of Gombe State to “the continuity in government, ongoing investments in infrastructure, alignment with federal initiatives, economic diversification, and strategic agricultural programmes”, underscoring the role of the state government in being catalyst for turning around the fortunes of the state and putting it on the sustainable path of growth and development.

PCL maintained that “the state government is well-positioned to maximise the benefits of federal government initiatives and programmes, while appreciating efficient resource utilisation, effective citizen engagement and the government’s responsiveness to the genuine concerns of its people.

On improvement in security, the report affirmed that despite its location in the North-East, a region seriously affected by Boko Haram insurgency, Gombe State has experienced unparalleled peace and security.

“Gombe State has effectively managed the coexistence of diverse ethnic and occupational groups, notably farmers and herders. The state government‘s proactive approach to security issues and its commitment to fostering peaceful coexistence contribute to its stable outlook. This stability is a solid foundation for sustained progress and economic growth“, it said.

The group expressed confidence in the current economic policies and programmes of Inuwa-led administration, pointing that „Gombe State can solidify its position as a beacon of sustainable development and a model for other states to emulate.

“As the state continues to engage its populace, invest in education, and pursue collaborative initiatives, it is well on its way to achieving even greater prosperity and fostering socioeconomic growth“, PCL noted in the report.
