Gombe State governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has flagged off the Billiri West local council development area (LCDA) secretariat to strengthen local institutions and bring governance closer to the people.
At Tal, the governor performed the groundbreaking for the LCDA secretariat, stressing that the creation of additional LCDAs was designed to deepen inclusiveness and enhance service delivery at the grassroots. He noted that his administration inherited a weak local government system upon assuming office, but has since revitalised it to function more effectively.
“In the past, your councillor was based in Billiri, but now he will be here with you,” the governor said, assuring residents that the project would be completed and serve as a functional administrative hub. He urged the community, especially the youth, to take ownership of the facility and protect public infrastructure.
-The governor also linked recent political realignments in the area to growing unity, expressing optimism that it would accelerate development and strengthen support for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In Billiri town, Governor Yahaya commissioned the newly rebuilt Kantoma Market Commercial Complex, a major economic asset reconstructed after the destruction of the former market.
Named in honour of the late traditional ruler, Dr Abdu Buba Maisheru II, the upgraded facility has been expanded from 44 shops to a modern storey complex housing 114 shops, significantly boosting trading capacity and improving the business environment.
The governor said the reconstructed market would revive local commerce, restore livelihoods, and create opportunities for small and medium-scale enterprises across Billiri and neighbouring communities.
“This market will not only provide a safer and more organised trading environment but also stimulate enterprise growth, generate employment and strengthen economic activities in the area,” he said after inspecting the facility.
Earlier, Billiri LGA Chairman, Hon. Egla Idris, commended the governor for prioritising grassroots development, noting that the establishment of the LCDA and reconstruction of the market have enhanced inclusiveness and economic confidence in the area.
Also speaking, the Director-General of the Joint Project Development Agency, Bldr. Mahmud Yusuf revealed that the LCDA secretariat is the 10th of its kind initiated by the administration, alongside other infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and markets.
