Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has called on state governments across Nigeria to emulate Kano’s Special Reporters Initiative, describing it as an innovative model for strengthening government communication, enhancing public enlightenment and promoting development.

Speaking at the Arewa Media Summit in Kano, Governor Yusuf disclosed that Kano is the first state in the country to establish the positions of Senior Special Reporters and Special Reporters as part of efforts to improve communication between government and the people.

According to a statement issued by his Spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, he said the initiative currently engages more than 150 young men and women deployed across ministries, departments, agencies and the 44 local government areas of the state.

He explained that the Special Reporters are responsible for documenting and publicising the developmental programmes and achievements of both the Federal and Kano State governments while also enlightening citizens on government policies and programmes.

Governor Yusuf said the initiative has significantly improved the dissemination of government information, strengthened citizens’ participation in governance and created meaningful employment opportunities for young people.

He described effective communication as an essential component of good governance, adding that timely and credible information helps build public confidence and encourages greater civic participation.

The Governor urged other sub-national governments to adopt similar initiatives in order to strengthen public engagement, improve access to credible information and support national development.

He reiterated the Kano State Government’s commitment to supporting policies and programmes that promote responsible communication, transparency and inclusive governance.
