Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Stride In Kano’s Housing Development

Few subnational governments in Nigeria have staked as much on housing as Kano has under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. For a state whose rapid urban growth has long outpaced its housing stock, the administration’s Housing Development Agenda, driven by its Ministry of Housing Development, is delivering results at a scale rarely matched at state level, proof that under this Governor, bold promises are being turned into brick and mortar.

The scale of the achievement is difficult to miss. Over 5,000 housing units are already in progress across all 36 Local Government Areas of the state, part of a wider portfolio of 22 key housing projects. The programme is already generating more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, while over 100 kilometres of new roads now run through freshly developed housing layouts. Millions of citizens stand to benefit, evidence of a Governor delivering development to every corner of the state, not just the metropolis as it used to be.

At the heart of the agenda are two related commitments, both hallmarks of this administration’s people-first approach. The first, Affordable Housing for All, covers mass housing schemes, low- and middle-income housing, and dedicated support for civil servants and vulnerable groups. The second, rehabilitating established state housing estates, shows a Governor unwilling to abandon what earlier administrations built – the revitalisation of the Kwankwasiya, Amana and Bandirawo mega cities, and the 600-unit Gida-Gida Mega City among them, all restored and modernised under his watch.

Recognising that housing without infrastructure is only half a promise, the Governor has ensured the Infrastructure Integration component – roads, water and electricity extended to every new layout, alongside a metropolitan decongestion initiative – runs alongside every estate, so that new communities function from day one. Alongside it, a Security & Safe Communities pillar – police stations embedded within housing layouts, security plazas, surveillance systems, and a dedicated Emergency Operation Centre – reflects a leadership determined to make every new home a safe one.

What sets this Governor’s programme apart from a simple housing scheme is its reach into the institutions that serve every citizen. The portfolio now extends to the 48-unit Commissioners’ Quarters at Yan Lemo/Na’ibawa, rural model cities planned across the state’s 36 LGAs, and a new headquarters for the Kano State Housing Corporation at Kwankwasiyya City. The judiciary features too, with new High Courts and a Chief Justice’s Office at the Ceremonial Court and an official residence for the Chief Justice at Government House, while even the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport’s protocol lounge and security plazas at six major entrances to the metropolis bear the mark of this administration’s thoroughness. This is a housing agenda that has grown, under deliberate and visionary leadership, into a truly institutional one.

With 22 key projects already spread across all 36 Local Government Areas, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has set a pace that few of his predecessors, or peers in other states, can match. Estates are filling with families, roads and utilities are arriving alongside them, and new institutional buildings are rising to match. It is a record built not on announcements, but on units delivered, jobs created, and communities transformed.

What can fairly be said, on the strength of the work done so far, is that the Abba Kabir Yusuf administration has approached housing with a seriousness and a geographic reach that is uncommon in Nigerian state governance, where flagship estates in the state capital too often stand in for a housing policy that never reaches beyond it. Under this Governor, Kano is becoming a state where housing is not a privilege confined to the metropolis, but a deliberate, state-wide undertaking – building a Kano that is first in all dealings, and a first for all.
